Project Summary

Exploring how the classroom environment impacts on the way children engage, behave and learn. A Creative Partnerships project.

Designer Rob Cullis worked with Heathlands Primary School to investigate factors within a classroom environment that affect the way children engage, learn and behave for example sound, colour and light.  Rob worked with two classes one in KS1 and one in KS2 to explore their learning styles and develop design solutions to support their learning. Three children from each class were identified with contrasting learning styles and were observed closely throughout the project in order to track in-depth responses to different environments.

The project allowed time for research and space for both the designer’s ideas to be tested but also involved practical work with teachers and young people to enable them to understand the impact of design.  The process involved making visits, brainstorming and modelling as well as testing temporary changes to the space.

The changes have been a positive experience for the children especially as they were the ones changing the environment.
