Changing Spaces
Artist Junko Mori working with children
workshop at Paget Primary School
Project SummaryPaget Primary School in Birmingham worked with architect Ian Tipton, metalsmith Junko Mori, furniture designer David Gates and colour specialist Teresa Collins to develop ideas about how to change a previously underused space in their school through a series of workshops and discussions.
Workshops involved whole school Art and Architecture days in which every child explored related themes as well as a series of more focussed design-based sessions where the makers and architect worked with small groups of children from across the school to discuss and develop ideas for the space.
The exploration resulted in a series of new commissions for the school: a metal tree and canopy, a set of benches, a series of coloured glass cut outs, a hand crafted textured wooden handrail and a new colour scheme.
The school now has a flexible new space that can be used for small group work and one to one sessions.
The project concluded with a celebration event and set of workshops for parents and children from Nursery, Reception and Year One to introduce them to the space and the artists who worked on it.
