Making willow structures

Project SummaryWorking with early years exploring materials
Willow artist Laura Bacon has been working with nursery schools in Birmingham to investigate materials.
Laura has worked at St Thomas Centre Nursery in Birmingham City Centre and Princethorpe Nursery in Weoley Castle.
At St Thomas's Laura worked with three groups of parents and children to explore different structures using willow and a range of other materials. At Princethorpe she worked with a small group of parents and children and also created sculptures in the grounds of the nursery. As part of the project, parents and children from both settings have visited a willow farm. The last residency took place at Bloomsbury nursery in Nechells.
Staff members from each setting have been responsible for taking their own documentation with support from artist Marcus Rowlands. They will work with Marcus at the end of the project to produce a book.
Reflection and evaluation have been an important part of the project helping to shape how each residency develops.
Our work in early years settings was showcased at an exhibition in the Custard factory, Birmingham in May 2007.
Laura also worked with us at this years ArtsFest in Birmingham, 9th and 10th September 2006.
During the project they developed their language skills and literacy skills by using new vocabulary. They talked about what a nest is, dens, the moon. The project has really fuelled their creative thoughts and imaginations
